Big rear‑wheel drive Volvos have an enviable reputation for both reliability and longevity. This 1988 example is a GLE, denoting one of the more more luxurious and better‑equipped variants, and so comes with black leather interior to complement its metallic blue exterior. Fitted with the 2.3‑litre ‘Red Block’ engine ‑ a non‑interference unit with its origins stretching back to the tough old 240 of the 1970s ‑ this example comes with working heated front seats and original dealer‑supplied hard tray mats and rigid boot liner. The vendor tells us that the front fog lights are new, and all electric windows are working, as are the sunroof (albeit with a broken deflector hinge that needs to be pressed down manually before closing) and the petrol and temperature gauge (a common fault on 740s).

The MoT runs until October 2021; when tested, the car’s mileage was 169,651, it’s now 169,822. There is a partial history in the service book (up to 159,705 miles, albeit with a gap from 81,087 miles to 146,494 miles; earlier services are by a main Volvo dealer, the last three non‑Volvo) which is present in the original dealer pack with other paperwork such as the owner’s handbook and radio instructions (with code). The 1980s’ factory radio is still in the car; other original features include the bright alloy wheels and mud guards.

According to the vendor, both the ‘interior and exterior are commensurate with age and mileage, and the car does not smell of cigarettes or dogs. The leather is of average condition, with the rear seats better than the front. There are minor scratches and stonechips on the exterior, and the paint looks original apart from the nearside rear wheel arch. The only rust is a small amount on the bottom of the rear wheel arches, while the sunroof has a small blister on its paint (but this is aluminium).’ He also reports that the ignition key requires a ‘certain knack to remove it ‑ you need to slightly pull it out as you turn the engine off to remove the key, otherwise it’s a bit of brute force’. He believes that a previous key breaking off in the lock may have caused this issue. It also appears that the headline has been replaced at some point, although the new one still has some faults.

The car comes with its V5 and some current and past MoTs, plus a set of spare keys.
