The Volvo Amazon ‑ although it was only officially called that in Sweden; everywhere else it was known as the 120‑series ‑ ran from 1956 to 1970, and helped establish the Scandinavian manufacturer's reputation in Europe and the USA for robust, durable and reliable vehicles.

Although saloons were designated as 120s, estate variants were christened 220s. In the case of this car, registered in January 1968, it's a 221 ‑ the first '2' meaning it's an estate, the second '2' also denoting an estate, and the final digit, '1', signifying it has a B18A single‑carburettor 1778cc engine. The car has had two owners from new and covered 120,019 miles in total, which can be verified from the history file.

What makes this Volvo stand out, other than its very good condition inside and out, is that it is unrestored and totally original, according to the vendor. He reports that the panels are original, no welding has been carried out, and the vehicle has been stored in a garage at nights. Waxoyling has been carried out from new, which has no doubt aided the 221's excellent state of preservation.

Recent work includes the addition of an overdrive, new tyres, new rear springs and a complete set of shock absorbers. We are told that the car drives beautifully.

Accompanying the Volvo is a large history folder that includes the V5C, service booklet (stamped up to 70,454 miles in 1973), the owner's manual, MoT certificates from 1975 to 2021, a photocopy of the original log book, and a stack of bills dating back to the late-1990s, showing a lot of care, attention and money spent over the past 20 years or so. There's also a set of spare keys.
