The Volkswagen Type 3 was introduced in 1961 and expanded the German marque's model range further beyond the ubiquitous Beetle, Transporter and Karmann Ghia. The three body styles ‑ two‑door Notchback (saloon), Fastback (coupe) and Variant (estate) used the same air‑cooled, rear‑engined principles of the Beetle but offered more passenger and luggage space, plus a larger engine. And just as with Beetles and Transporters, as classics they're very popular with modifiers.

This left-hand drive one has been eye-catchingly customised. It's a 1969 model that was sold new in Canada, but later shipped to the UK and was registered here in June 2015. Since then, there have been two former registered keepers. The mods include a Type 1 front beam on air ride, narrowed 3.5 inches. The rear is tubbed. The engine is now a 1971cc unit on twin-carburettors, which has been rebuilt - the build sheet is in the paperwork file. As far as is known, the customising was done when the car was overseas. Inside, there's a quick-shift gearchange, and the vendor tells us that even the heater works - something that's not always a given with old Volkswagens, but probably a necessity for Canada! The colour is an official Volkswagen shade, L380 Turquoise. The vendor reports the car as 'driving superbly', with an odometer reading of 74,053 miles.

The history folder includes the V5C, along with some paperwork from the car's Canadian life, including shipping information and NOVA confirmation. There are also MoT certificates from 2015 and 2017. No MoT is currently on the car as, due to its age, it is now exempt. In addition, there's also the owner's manual in its original wallet. Two Porsche-branded alloy wheel centre caps are also included.
