The second generation 5 Series was introduced in 1981 and ran through to 1988, replacing the previous E12 models. At first, only four‑ and six‑cylinder petrol engines were available, but a diesel option joined the line‑up in 1983. The E28 also saw the advent of the first M5. The range continued to 1988 when it was replaced by the E34 5 Series.

This handsome red 1985 example, registered in January 1985, is a 525E automatic, with 2693cc straight‑six engine. In September, it passed an MoT with no advisories; the current ticket is valid until September 2022. The current odometer reading is 116,367 miles, and six former keepers are recorded.

The vendor states that the car 'drives very well' and having recently been used for a classic car publication feature, we can confirm that it does perform well and behaves as it should on the road.

The paperwork folder includes the present V5C and a copy of the current MoT. Previous MoT certificates date from 2012, 2014, 2015 and 2017. There are some invoices dating from the 1980s, as well as more recent bills. These include a replacement radiator and water pump in 2017. The service book is stamped with 15 stamps up until 57,546 miles in March 1997.

Overall, the car presents very well, with a particularly tidy beige cloth interior.

There is a Category D insurance loss (vehicle damaged but repairable; insurer decided not to repair) recorded against the car from January 1999.
