The 1172cc sidevalve‑engined Ford Popular 103E that this Special uses as a basis was built  in 1955. But during the mid‑1980s, it was converted into an open sports car, using historic or hand‑crafted parts, with a variety of different vehicles donating parts albeit with the Popular providing the chassis, engine and transmission. The body is formed of plywood panels wrapped in aluminium and bolted to a steel frame of rectangular hollow tubes welded or bolted to the original chassis. There are components from 16 different vehicles, which were mainly sourced from scrapyards and autojumbles. Although most of the mechanical parts date from the 1950s, there are some from the 1930s. The radiator is from a MkI Ford Fiesta.

The engine is described as being slightly tuned, with a larger carburettor than standard. An Aquaplane cylinder head may also be fitted.

The Ford Pop Special was re-registered in November 1987. Its odometer reading is now 61,850 miles and just one former registered keeper is recorded on the V5C. The vendor is selling in order to acquire a more modern second car.

Included in the paperwork file are the V5C, general notes from the owner on the car and numerous records in two files. These include maintenance handbooks, workshop manuals and a parts list, plus handwritten technical notes. There's a selection of bills, invoices, old MoT certificates and previous log books as well.
