The W111 range of Mercedes‑Benz saloons and coupes from 1959 to 1968 were very smartly‑styled machines, soon given the nickname of 'fintails' due to their distinctive rear‑end styling.

This 220S (with 2195cc six‑cylinder overhead‑cam engine) example was registered new in the UK during March 1963. Since then, it's covered 96,422 miles according to the odometer. Three former registered keepers are recorded on the V5C.

The car was driven 160 miles to the auction with no issues, according to the vendor. Recent work carried out includes a full service including oil filter, spark plugs, distributor cap, rotor and condenser. There's also been a new clutch, battery, and the subframe mounts and all four jacking points underneath have recently been done. The car presents well, albeit with some areas of minor bubbling in places on the body. The interior appears to be original and thus displays some patina.

Included in the paperwork folder are the V5C, an Irish registration document dating from 2015 and a 2016 NOVA certificate (as it seems the 220S spent some time in the Republic of Ireland), various Irish documentation, MoT certificates from 2015, 2016 and 2018, and assorted 21st century invoices. These suggest the bumpers were repaired and rechromed in 2013. A full service was carried out in 2017 at 92,121 miles, at a cost of £1590.48. In addition, there's the owner's handbook and a period marketing brochure.
