Estimate: £4,000 - 6,000
  • Chassis number: SAXXL21N20135870
In 1982, this Opaline Green Metallic with Savannah trim 998cc Mini 1000 HLE (with the 'E' denoting an economy‑tuned engine, not that Minis were ever especially thirsty on fuel) was purchased by its first owner, a Mrs Clark, with just delivery mileage on its clock. She'd continue to keep it being, up until now, its only owner. Over the next 38 years, she drove it on an almost daily basis. However, when not in use, 'Min' (as the car was christened) was parked in its own centrally‑heated and carpeted garage, while any maintenance was undertaken by a Mini specialist.

Even with such care and attention, by 2005, age and use was beginning to take its toll on the car, and Min was renovated, with new sills, repairs to the underneath, a full respray and new headlining. 10 years after this, the engine was taken out and stripped for inspection, but was found to still be in good order. Nevertheless, a new unleaded cylinder head was fitted, along with new standard‑sized pistons, big end and crank bearings. The clutch, gasket and oil seals were replaced at the same time, while the carburettor was overhauled, a new water pump installed, and a reconditioned starter motor and alternator fitted.

In recent years, Min often covered less than 10 miles a week (according to a note to an insurance note) on local trips with Mrs Clark, with around a thousand or so miles being covered annually. The mileage now is 108,928, which is warranted by the very extensive paperwork history, which includes practically every bit of paperwork relating to the vehicle. This encompasses the owner's handbook, invoices dating back over the entire span of the car's life, British Leyland paint and trim colours booklet, and even the pre-delivery BL slip. The original sales invoice, for £3428.50, is also in the folder, as is the Austin-Rover 'Passport to Service' booklet, tax discs dating back over many years, along with some pictures of the 2005 renovation. The MoT certificates date from 1987 (when the mileage was recorded as 19,462 miles), with the last ticket having expired in December 2021.

With so much conscientious attention during its life, coupled with ownership by just one person and comparatively little use over recent years, this little Mini is still in very good order inside and out. For fans of authenticity, the original dealer numberplates are fitted, while there's also a period Sharp radio/cassette player installed. The black sill trims are missing - but these are readily available - while the engine bay has been finished in all-over black, including the engine itself. The car drives very well, with the sort of pep and enthusiasm that made even the humblest of Minis such fun to be behind the wheel of.
