The Volkswagen Golf GTI is considered to be the car that kick‑started the whole hot hatch craze, with the MkI variant regarded as one of the zeniths of the type.

This 1981 1.6‑litre example was initially used in Germany before coming to the  UK in 1983, being registered in the UK in September 1983. There are five former registered owners recorded since then.

The paperwork file includes the V5C , a Haynes workshop manual, original book pack with owner's handbook, service book stamped up to 29,256 miles in September 1984, and other documentation, and a Classics in Colour book on the VW Golf GTI model. There are 1986, 1987, 2001, 2003, 2006 and 2015 MoT certificates; the last MoT expired in October 2016. A handful of invoices from the early 21st century are also included, as is an album of photographs showing some extensive restoration work underway, although it is unclear when these were taken.

The current odometer reading is 157,394 miles.
