Known as 'Bray's Beast', this Skoda 136 Rapid has quite a secret. Instead of the standard 1289cc engine, it has a 3.5‑litre Rover V8 engine coupled to Renault 25 transmission. The car is fully road‑legal and has been used in motorsport events such as the Exeter Classic Car Trials, Land's End Trial etc. It's currently running on 15‑inch diameter wheels for trialling, but can also run on 13‑inch wheels for hill climbs, sprints and other events.

The Skoda was converted by the vendor, who had been running a 1300cc Skoda Estelle in Class 4 trials. However, as certain members of his club weren't that happy with it always winning, he then built this Rapid V8 instead to run in Class 7 trials. Among the exterior modifications were a full‑length underbody guard and two spare wheels mounted on a removable rear carrier to provide extra weight for traction.

The 3.5-litre Rover V8 is fitted with an electronic ignition and electric water pump, plus a high capacity radiator which, the vendor tells us, runs at 75 degrees all the time. There's a paddle clutch fitted to the Renault 25 transmission with a Four Planet wheel diff and coil-over rear suspension with adjustable platforms. Inside, there's a full six-point Rollcenter roll cage, Recaro front seats, a Brantz International trip meter with electric speedo reading, on-board air pump and pipe for re-inflating tyres quickly.

The paperwork comprises just the V5C showing the car was registered in August 1989 and three former registered keepers are recorded. There's no current MoT.

The vendor tells us that this is a 'real fun car that is easy to drive' - and it's certainly something that turns head and should be very effective in club trials for anybody looking for an entry point into low-cost motorsport.
