The 1172cc sidevalve-engined Ford Popular 103E that this Special uses as a basis, was built in 1955. It is believed that during the mid 1980s it was converted into an open sports car using a mixture of historic and hand-crafted parts, with a variety of different vehicles providing parts; the chassis, engine and transmission remained Popular. The body is formed of plywood panels wrapped in aluminium and bolted to a steel frame of rectangular hollow tubes welded or bolted to the original chassis. There are components from 16 different vehicles, mainly sourced from scrapyards and autojumbles. Although most of the mechanical parts date from the Fifties, there are some from the Thirties while the radiator is from a MkI Ford Fiesta. It is believed the engine has been slightly tuned, with a larger-than-standard carburettor and an Aquaplane cylinder head. car was re-registered in November 1987 and its odometer shows 61,807 miles. In July 2022, the vehicle was professionally resprayed by The Body Centre Norwich. The Special is running and driving but has seen very little use over the last year. The only paperwork with the vehicle is the V5C, showing four registered keepers overall.
