1965 AEC MAMMOTH MAJOR MK5
LOT 580
This 1965 AEC Mammoth Major MK5 has an interesting history. Supplied new to the London Brick Company Ltd of Stewartby Bedfordshire, it was first used to carry green bricks from the manufacturing works to the satellite kilns for firing. For this work a a special box van body was designed with sliding doors. This work ceased after about nine and a half years, when the satellite kilns closed. At this time the box body was taken off and the rear of the cab was converted into a crew cab when H.G.V. driver training came in.
It was also converted from a double to a single drive rear axle layout, then a flat body was fitted (which has never carried a brick in anger!) The lorry was owned by the London Brick Company from 1965 through to 1987 when sold to a commercial vehicle dealer before being acquired for preservation by a family from Hythe.
Our vendor purchased the AEC in April 1996 and fitted the box containing living accommodation to the flatbed. It has been used extensively for long distance rallies and road runs, travelling all over the British Isles.
The living accommodation includes a gas cooker, fridge, sink, two beds, cassette toilet and shower. The third axle benefits from four new tyres, tubes and gaiters. The AEC has been fitted with two new batteries and a new locking fuel tank.
The engine is a 691 unit fitted to a six speed gearbox and it benefits from full air brakes. Registered as a historic vehicle. Comes with V5C
