This 1989 Trabant 601 is certainly one of the most attention grabbing cars in the auction. Built at great expense from a standard car into homage of the state controlled German Democratic Republic GDR rally cars of their time. It is understood that in the GDR, overseas cars were forbidden and home-built cars were serious contenders in motorsport competition, often having much money spent on them.

This example has been modified to a very high standard and it is clear looking at the extensive history folder that much money has been spent. It has been built to RS700 Race Spec and has a current Motorsport UK Rally vehicle passport.

The Trabant featured in Episode 4 of Guy Martins ‘Guys Garage’, which was filmed at Brands Hatch. Bought in Germany and UK registered in 2019. The body and paintwork are in good order and the car has factory rally livery.

Described by our vendor as driving well and screaming as two strokes do, this example has had an engine rebuild some years ago and was tuned prior to filming on Guy Martins rolling road, where the original Mikuni carburettor was upgraded to the single SU by Guys tech and close friend Paul the Carb. Modifications are 1 ½ SU carburettor, sports clutch, lightened flywheel, 700 engine, 800RS air intake, 4-speed gearbox with Wartburg drive shafts, hubs, bigger front brakes, air intakes for cooling larger finned brakes, large bore bespoke exhaust and wiring loom with documentation.

Comes with Motorsport UK Vehicle Passport, Vehicle Verification letter, technical information a large quantity of parts invoices, German registration documents, import paperwork and registration information, various reprinted manuals, stopwatch and V5. 4,553 recorded miles
