1972 VW 1600 TYPE 3 SQUAREBACK

1584cc, manual. The vendor of this rare Volkswagen 1600 Type 3 station wagon “Squareback” tells us that it was partially restored by a previous owner, and describes it as “running well and reliable”. It has been resprayed blue, and a receipt in the large history file describes an engine rebuild in 2020. During the current tenure, which began in 2023, it has received new gear linkages and steering bushes, the door cards have been recovered, and a cream vinyl wrap has been applied to the bottom half of the car.

The engine is fitted with an electric cooling fan, twin carbs and a sports exhaust system (with J-tube delete), and the interior features new front seats from a modern Mini, and a diesel heater. The odometer shows 9120 miles, although this is likely to signify 109,120.

The car was originally sold by a dealer in Lancashire in January 1972. It comes with a well stamped service record up to 100k miles in 1989, together with a good collection of old receipts, a few tax discs and old MoT certificates. The latest MoT expired in 2019, although a historic vehicle it is now exempt from testing requirements. The file also contains original sales materials and a workshop manual.
