1971 LAND ROVER SERIES 2A
3.5-litre V8, manual. This nearly-completed Land Rover Series IIA project is one of the best Land Rover builds we've seen in a long time. The vendor tells us: "I originally bought it for myself, sold it, then bought it back in a complete mess. My wife asked if she could restore it, so I gave it to her. She did all the work that you can now see, until she was taken ill and the project stopped. Her wish was to sell it and give the money to charity."
Clearly much care and skill has gone into this project, with many new and galvanised parts. Work began in July 2016, starting with a new galvanised Richard’s chassis and a refurbished galvanised bulkhead. The previous diesel engine has been replaced with a 3.5-litre Rover V8 with JWR twin-port inlet manifold, Edelbrock carburettor and wrapped TVR exhaust headers routed forward of the front crossmember. The gearbox is an Aschroft 5-speed R380 on a military short bellhousing, and the Station Wagon bodywork incorporates an internal roll cage, bespoke cubby box, new Stage 1 door bottoms with anti-burst locks, custom rock sliders and a few other unique features, and finally a lovely respray in two-pack Lincoln Green (as per the late Queen's Range Rover). The Land Rover sits on a set of deep-dish rims from a Forward Control with new tyres, and the suspension is converted to parabolic springs. Many items have been galvanised, including the seat frames, and all originally galvanised parts have been re-galvanised.
The vehicle is accompanied by an original Land Rover parts catalogue and workshop manual, a few invoices for parts in 2016-20 (one for the galvanised bulkhead) and the current V5C which is in the vendor's name.
A few remaining jobs are needed, but it's nearly done. The vendor advises that the wiring will need completing, propshafts will need fabricating, brake shoes (supplied) will need to be fitted, and door lock barrels will be needed.
Please note the engine is dry, and has not been tested.
